ABOUT US

OUR HISTORY

The idea to open a craft distillery came about on a trip to Cape Town, South Africa in 2015.

Tasked with the job of finding a locally SA made Rum to make Dark N Stormy’s……There were no locally made Rums!

This sparked some discussion and then the distillery idea morphed from an original idea of a starting craft brewery. The seed had been planted….let’s make Rum…. somewhere….

Now find somewhere to do it and why Portugal? Use Port Wine Barrels to finish or age our Rum.

What other spirits can we make? Ok let’s make Gin as well!

What else can we do? Ok let’s open a Gin School & Tasting Room as well!

Our Logo, well everyone loves dogs….even those that say they don’t, secretly do. Our Scoundrels pooch is modelled on a “Cão de Água” or Portuguese Water Dog.

Our actual dog is called “Eleven” and is a Portuguese Water Dog who we plucked from a shelter as a rescue dog after he had been living rough on the streets of Portugal.

The inspiration for the distillery name came from the playwright and novelist George Bernard Shaw but when we use it with our dog Eleven, he is a beautiful scoundrel….even when he destroys a shoe, a hat or a TV remote. Hopefully you get to meet him!

OUR AWARDS

Since the London Spirits Competition started in 2018 there have been 26 Portuguese Gins entered. Of these, we currently have 3 Gins in the top 5 including the only Gold Medal ever issued to a Portuguese distillery. This is a monumental achievement given the high standards set by the competition and we have continually scored higher than many well known “international brands”. We know we produce World Class Spirits!

OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

At Scoundrels Distilling Co., we are deeply committed to sustainability, diligently recycling and repurposing every possible aspect of our production, from start to finish. We constantly strive to form partnerships with like-minded sustainable companies that share our values and aspirations to ensure that with every sip of our spirits, our customers can taste both our commitment to quality and our dedication to preserving the planet.

I visited the amazing distillery from Travis, who created a real bijou. It is located next to a beautiful park and walking distance from the FC Porto stadium (Dragon stadium). The gin and rum I've tasted were fantastic. I'll be back 😊

As a birthday treat we had a great time at INVICTA Gin school. Travis was brilliant giving great ideas to enable super gins for us both to produce. He was really helpful, knowledgable and extremely friendly. A lovely afternoon and very productive. Second to none experience. Fully recommend and we will be returning to make some more. Plus great Gins and Rum made here, just had to buy after extensive sample. Superb distillery in the heart of Porto.

Travis is officially Porto’s king of distillers.Wifey , baby Leon and I attended his Gin school on a typical rainy Porto day which soon to became a funny, interesting slightly tipsy and educational afternoon. We hands on crafted a unique Gin recipe with Travis’s guidance and distill it on the spot using tiny most adorable copper stills. Scoundrels recently became the official Gin brand of Porto’s soccer team and has a very interesting secret aged barrel Rum to hit the market soon. We left the still with two bottles of one of a kind self made Gin and baby Leon, AKA the cracker monster got his hands full of delicious crackers as well. Thanks Travis for a wonderful experience!

What a unique experience creating your own gin. They turned out delicious and both gins in completely different way (one more classic, another one more traditional). Fascinating how fast the flavour changes while distilling the gin. Thanks for having us.

WHAT AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE!Few things are cooler in life than getting a peek under the hood of the distilling process. But designing and distilling your very own gin? It elevates that state of amazement to an entirely different level. Travis led us through the process of designing a good gin. There were base recipes we could choose from and then add a personal *something something* to the mix. I headed straight for spicy and exotic, heavy on the ginger and cardamom. Each student gets their own mini copper still, which is custom-built locally and quite charming. You feel a bit like a mad scientist dumping your carefully-measured ingredients into the ethanol mixture and waiting for the heads, heart and tails to run through the coil and into your beaker below. Diluting the mixture to hit that 42%ABV sweet spot was definitely a lesson in patience.Bebé Picante---my Spicy Baby creation---isn't awesome gin. But it's interesting. And will make a great martini. I'm good with that. The process of making something with your own hands is sheer joy. I think there's something inherent in all humans that makes us long to create meaningful things. Deep bows to Invicta Gin School for giving people the chance to learn and try and laugh and ask questions both stupid and important.
